Achieve Superfine Disintegration with a High-Speed Homogenizer
Superfine disintegration in samples from 0.l ml to 2 liters in volume is achieved by using high-speed lab homogenizers such as the X360 offered by CAT Scientific. With a design speed of 45,000 RPM the 350-watt drive motor can be mated to rotor-stator generators in 6 sizes from 6 to 40mm in diameter and Teflon and slip-ring bearing shafts for maximum immersion from 55 to 300mm in depth, depending on the dispersion tools selected. Generator assemblies can be specified for viscous or coarse, low viscosity, fine or aqueous, and knife or cutting processing.
Variable Speed Homogenizer Accessory
While the X360 Homogenizer Drive is constructed as a single speed homogenizer its mixing speed can be set between 10,800 and 42,500 RPM in 10 increments with the optional P1500 variable speed control. The X360 is plugged into the P1500 controller which in turn is plugged into the power source. Then, using the potentiometer on the P1500 homogenizing is started at the lowest speed (1) and ramped to the desired speed. An overload fuse in the speed control unit protects against overheating if the sample viscosity is too high. Note that with or without the speed control the homogenizer must not be activated until the generator is immersed in the sample beaker.
Lab Homogenizer Operating Tips
Rotors and stators are sharp. Use caution when attaching the generator assembly tube to the drive motor by means of the fastening screw.
The X360 is not designed to be hand held when homogenizing. To avoid other sources of possible injury as well as breaking beakers and flasks the homogenizer must be firmly attached to a mounting stand by means of its supplied support rod. Crossover clamps and mounting stands are options but should be purchased if you do not have this equipment. Similarly, wrenches to attach and remove rotors and stators are other required but optional equipment. Take care that the sample container itself is firmly held and will not move during the homogenizing operation.
When positioning the generator in the sample keep it immersed to a depth of 55mm and no closer than 10mm from the bottom of the container. Offset the generator from the center of the container to avoid creating a vortex.
After use clean the X360 generator assembly by operating it in a solvent that dissolves substance residues and is not harmful to gaskets and seals. General-purpose disinfectants such as formalin and alcohol can be used, then rinse the components in sterilized water. The water should be discarded after each rinse. Use a mild detergent to wipe down the motor housing and P1500 housing but disconnect this equipment from the power source first.
